What We Are Looking For

We are always looking for talented lawyers at all levels, and whilst academics and knowledge are important, we also look for other qualities in our lawyers. We look for talented, enthusiastic individuals who have a pro-active, client-focused approach and are team-players.

Whilst there is no denying we wouldn’t be where we are without everyone’s hard-work, we are friendly, open and hard-working and provide a supportive environment, a pro-active approach to your work life balance, and offer you scope to grow in your role.

How to apply?

At Boyes Turner, we have minimum academic requirements for our training contracts. We can only accept your application if you have obtained, or are on course to obtain, a minimum 2:1 degree or equivalent. However, if you do not meet these requirements but feel you have extenuating circumstances and can provide documentation to support this then please do apply, completing the extenuating circumstances section of our application form.

We make no distinction between law and non-law graduates in the timing of our recruitment, however, we aim to make our appointments two years prior to the start of the training contract.

Applications are now open for 2026 training contracts and will close on 30 April 2024.

What is your policy regarding feedback?

Due to the large volume of applications received for training contacts we are unable to give feedback at the application stage. However constructive feedback is provided to all candidates attending assessment days.

How many trainees do you recruit each year?

We recruit between two and four trainees each year.

How far in advance should I apply for my training contract?

We typically recruit two years in advance.

Do you have a preference for law or any other degree discipline?

No. We aim to recruit a mixture of law and non-law graduates to the training scheme.

Is there a minimum grade for applicants?

2:1 minimum degree (or equivalent).

Do you have a preference for CPE/GDL, LPC institutions?

No

Do I need to have completed a vacation placement with the firm?

No. The vacation scheme is only one method of recruiting for our training contract scheme. However, you are encouraged to make an application to our vacation scheme as it may increase the likelihood of you obtaining a training contract with us and will also help you decide whether we are the right firm for you.

Do you favour applications from specific universities?

No. Individual and academic achievements are more important.

Do you specify which electives sponsored trainees can take during their LPC?

No. We do not specify but the electives should ideally be relevant to an area in which we have a practice group.

How is the training contract structured at Boyes Turner?

Trainees complete four six-month seats.

Can I choose my seats?

Your seat preference will be discussed with you both before and during your training contract. Wherever possible requests will be accommodated.

How much responsibility will I be given?

We recruit a small number of trainees each year to ensure you receive proper training and supervision while at the same time providing you with work which adds real value to the business.

During my training, will I work for one partner in each seat or with a variety of partners?

You will work with a range of Partners and other lawyers in each seat. This ensures the opportunity to experience a mix of work and range of supervisory styles.

How will I be assessed during my training contract?

At the start of your training contract you will be assigned to a Partner who will act as your training mentor throughout the course of your two year training contract. A supervisor will be allocated for each of your seats for day-to-day supervision and on-the-job training.

Can I defer my offer?

No. As we recruit relatively small numbers of trainees this is not possible and you should apply for the appropriate intake.

What are trainees paid?

Currently, trainees in their first year are paid £26,000 p.a. and £30,000 p.a. in the second year.
