Mediation in context
Mediation is an effective method of workplace conflict intervention that takes a less punitive and more practical approach to the resolution of conflict. Unlike other processes, mediation does not focus on procedural compliance, nor is it time-consuming, costly or disruptive to the organisation. Mediation has also been given greater emphasis following the repeal in April 2009 of the statutory dispute resolution procedures. Now the Employment Act 2008 together with the ACAS Code of Practice relating to disciplinaries and grievances encourages parties early on in a dispute to consider alternative dispute resolution before a claim is lodged.
