Employment and Tech Conference
In September we held our London Conference. This year, we focused on making work work in the 21st Century, with a particular focus on the technology sector. Discussion topics included: flexible and agile working, family friendly rights and the impact of generational diversity on our future workforces. We were thrilled to be joined by Giles Derrington, techUK’s Head of Policy: Brexit, International and Economics, and Bertie van Wyk, Insight Manager from Herman Miller. Both speakers brought the topics of agility, social ergonomics and how to create change ready workforces to life.
The Conference also saw the launch of our latest Technology Report – Tech be Nimble, Tech be Quick, Tech Don’t Forget the Legal Bit. For a copy of the Report click here.
Mock Employment Tribunal
We followed up our Conference with a thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking Mock Employment Tribunal event held at our Reading offices. Darren Smith from our Training Team and Barristers from 3PB discussed employment tribunal procedure and pitfalls in the morning, before bringing the Tribunal to life with a mock hearing – complete with witnesses and cross examination! Our audience was mainly HR, who shared how important it is for their managers to understand the implications of what they write and what they say. It really was a great event and our thanks goes to 3PB and all our delegates for asking such great questions!

Training is Important, Training Does Work
As we shift our HR attention to 2019, we must also factor in the need to train our people. In the disputes we hear about, if only the manager had had some knowledge about what to do in a given situation, often problems can be dealt with at an early stage. Employment training be it legally based or soft skills, is a great way to raise the profile of employee engagement or management issues, instil in your managers the confidence to deal with issues and also prevent issues from escalating. It is also a way to get your managers talking and engaging, away from their desks in a space where they can learn. Claims are on the rise and prevention is better than cure.
