Mr S worked as a plumber for Southwark Borough Council. The work he did involved refurbishing council houses and flats including tower blocks at the Elephant and Castle and Heygate estates. He also worked on flats in Bermondsey and near London Bridge. He was exposed to asbestos when he removed asbestos panels to access pipes.
He also worked in libraries, old people’s homes and other buildings that came under the ownership of the Borough. He frequently went into boiler houses in blocks of flats and public buildings where the pipework and boilers were lagged with asbestos.
The work he did was very dusty. He was never provided with a mask nor warned about the dangers of asbestos.
Court proceedings were issued and a date was fixed for the trial however shortly before the trial, the case was settled for the sum of £15,000.
