Telecom engineer’s asbestos related lung cancer claim settled for £150,000

Our asbestos claims lawyers secured £150,000 compensation after making an asbestos related lung cancer claim on behalf of Mr K, aged 75. Mr K was a retired telephone engineer who had, up until his lung cancer diagnosis, lived a very active retirement with his wife enjoying walking, ballroom dancing and frequent holidays.

Mr K was employed by British Telecom as a telecommunications engineer for the whole of his working career having started working with the GPO at the age of 16 in 1952 as an apprentice to retiring at the age of 57 in 1993.

He was exposed to asbestos in telephone exchanges when he was involved in removal and replacing of asbestos bags which were placed around the holes in walls where cables passed through from one room to another. The asbestos bags measured about 8 x 5 x 3 inches. The holes were about 2 feet in depth and 2 feet in height. As a consequence, a significant number of bags needed to be used in each hole. He performed this task for about 20 years.

He later became responsible for maintaining the power systems in a large number of telephone exchanges in the Hampshire region. This involved building load frames using asbestos sheets. He also serviced the lifts and came into contact with asbestos brake linings.
