James Chapman is a Solicitor in Boyes Turner’s Dispute Resolution and Debt Recovery teams, helping businesses and individuals navigate a wide range of disputes and debt recovery matters. He works closely with clients to understand their objectives, providing clear and pragmatic commercial advice on resolving disputes, recovering debts and managing litigation risk.
James advises businesses and individuals on a range of dispute resolution, debt recovery and insolvency matters, providing practical and commercially focused advice tailored to each client’s objectives. He regularly assists with defended debt recovery claims, helping clients recover outstanding sums efficiently while managing risk at proportionate costs. James also supports clients in relation to bankruptcy and insolvency matters, guiding them through what can often be complex and time-sensitive situations.
Drawing on experience gained across several of the firm’s business services teams, including Commercial & Technology, Commercial Property, Employment and Construction, James brings a broad commercial perspective to his work. This enables him to understand disputes within the wider context of a client’s business and provide pragmatic advice that considers both the legal and commercial implications. He has experience assisting on complex disputes, including those involving construction and professional services, and works closely with clients to identify practical solutions and achieve positive outcomes.
James particularly enjoys and focuses his practice on commercial contract work within the construction context. These disputes tend to be high value, complex and memorable. James can also leverage his time spent in the firm’s construction team in an advisory capacity to better understand the realities of construction disputes.
James is an active member of the firm’s Social Mobility Group and spends additional time engaging with local schools and planning firm events to promote social mobility. He has led presentations on access to the profession, helped plan awareness events and has attended CV workshops at schools in an effort to inspire others from underrepresented backgrounds to enter the profession.
James's key cases

- Successfully negotiated a favourable settlement for a client facing a significant claim pursuant so s.127 of the Insolvency Act 1986.
- Drafted complicated particulars of claim relating to unjust enrichment for an accountancy dispute wherein judgment was obtained in full.
- Instructed to carry out extensive advice in relation to consumer law disputes, carrying out negotiations pre-action helping to achieve a suitable resolution taking into account the rights and remedies of the consumer.
