Laura Magson, Partner and Head of Boyes Turner’s Mesothelioma and Asbestos Disease team, has more than 20 years of specialist experience in claims for clients with mesothelioma and asbestos-related disease. She is an APIL accredited Asbestos Disease Specialist and Senior Litigator and is recognised as a leading industrial disease lawyer by Legal 500 and Chambers UK Legal Guide.
Laura’s widely acknowledged expertise as an asbestos-related disease claims litigator is reflected in her role for APIL as an assessor of other solicitors who are applying for asbestos disease specialist accreditation. Her experience, empathy and dedication to securing justice and compensation for those affected by negligent asbestos exposure is also recognised in her team’s legal panel membership of prominent asbestos support group, HASAG, whose clients she represents.
Laura is known for her outstanding client care and her industry knowledge and mesothelioma expertise. She specialises in mesothelioma cases requiring expert knowledge and swift action. She has represented clients at inquests and in civil proceedings including the Court of Appeal.
Laura has dedicated her career to securing compensation for individuals and bereaved families who have been affected by mesothelioma and other asbestos-related disease. She is deeply committed to her clients’ best interests and this ethos is at the forefront of her leadership of her equally dedicated and hardworking team.
Laura combines exceptional technical knowledge with compassionate care for her clients and their families, supporting them as they come to terms with their life-changing diagnosis, helping them secure compensation, financial support and access to the care they need during the most difficult time of their lives. She has helped countless bereaved, dependent families after the death of their loved one from asbestos-related disease, providing support and representation at inquests as well as sensitive and practical guidance throughout the legal claims process.
Laura aims to secure substantial interim payments and settlements for her injured clients during their lifetime, often within months of instruction, with guaranteed future provision for private immunotherapy treatment costs, where needed. Where there is a risk of future serious deterioration, such as in claims involving lung cancer, asbestosis and pleural thickening, she protects her client’s interests with settlements made on a provisional damages basis.
When it is not possible to conclude the case during a client’s lifetime, Laura supports their family to complete the claim on the deceased’s behalf. In addition to her clients’ compensation, she negotiates with the defendant insurers to provide voluntary repayments of end-of-life care costs for the hospices which nurse her clients.
Laura’s well-deserved, excellent reputation as a mesothelioma specialist brings her clients from all over the UK and abroad, and from a variety of trades and occupations. Her track record of successful claims includes cases arising from low-level exposure, environmental exposure to asbestos from living near an asbestos factory or from breathing in dust from the clothes of family members. She succeeds in complex cases involving multiple defendants, and where other solicitors have failed or are reluctant to act owing to difficulties arising from lack of evidence. Her compassion and commitment to making a difference for her clients results in a tenacity and persistence which enables her to succeed in strongly defended or difficult cases.
Laura is an outspoken campaigner dedicated to using her knowledge to raise public awareness and make a difference to the lives of those affected by asbestos exposure. She has given live interviews on BBC Radio on mesothelioma and asbestos-related disease and the implications of the Diffuse Mesothelioma Payment Scheme. She personally supports asbestos disease sufferers at support groups, coffee mornings and charity events, and gives regular presentations and training on asbestos disease and related claims to health care professionals throughout the country.
Away from the office, Laura helps raise awareness and funds for asbestos disease support groups and charities. Her fundraising events have included abseiling down The Blade skyscraper in Reading in aid of children’s hospice, Naomi House, hosting a mixed netball tournament and a 25km Thames Path Challenge walk for Mesothelioma UK.
