Boyes Turner’s medical negligence lawyers secured a £65,000 compensation settlement for a woman in her fifties after hospital delays in diagnosing her detached retina led to a partial loss of vision in one eye.
Our client noticed on waking one morning that her vision had become distorted. She went immediately to the ophthalmic department of the defendant hospital, where she was examined by an ophthalmic nurse. The nurse telephoned the ‘on call’ consultant ophthalmologist who advised that it was not necessary for him to examine our client in person, but that he would call her the next day. Our client was discharged from the hospital. She attended her optometrist the next day, who immediately diagnosed a retinal detachment and referred her to hospital. She subsequently underwent an operation to repair the retinal detachment but, as a result of the delay, has been left with a loss of approximately 70% of the vision in one eye.
We sought the opinion of an expert ophthalmologist, who confirmed that our client would have almost completely avoided the loss of vision in her eye if her detached retina been correctly diagnosed when she first attended the hospital.
We sent a letter of claim to the defendant hospital, which admitted liability (responsibility) for our client’s injury. The claim concluded with an out-of-court settlement of £65,000 compensation for our client.
