Peter had dyslexia and no matter what strategies his school put into place he continued to fall further and further behind at school. His parents requested a statutory assessment and the LA refused.
How we were able to help
We advised Peter’s school and his parents how to present all the support that they had given Peter over the past few years. We also instructed an independent Educational Psychologist and Speech and Language Therapist and using this evidence we helped Peter’s parents appeal to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDIST) against the LA’s decision. The LA backed down before the hearing and agreed to conduct a statutory assessment.
We negotiated with the LA to ensure that Parts 2 and 3 of the Statement of SEN accurately reflected Peter’s needs and the support that he needed. We were also successful in getting the parents’ preferred school named on the Statement – a small independent specialist school for children with dyslexia and communication difficulties.
Peter now gets all the support he needs and is thriving.
