Boyes Turner’s surgical negligence solicitors secured a compensation settlement for a man who needed an above knee amputation of his leg as a result of a surgeon’s negligence during knee replacement surgery.
Our client was 75 when he underwent a routine knee replacement operation. During the surgery, the surgeon mistakenly cut the popliteal artery. This artery is located behind the knee and provides the blood supply to the knee joint, thigh, lower leg and foot. Injuries to this artery can result in limb-threatening or fatal complications. The surgical injury led to an infection which ultimately resulted in our client having to undergo an above knee amputation.
We helped our client pursue a surgical negligence claim against the hospital. The parties’ experts disagreed about whether the damage to the artery was the result of substandard (negligent) operative technique or whether it was a rare, but recognised, complication of the knee replacement procedure.
Settlement was reached soon after we issued court proceedings. Our client’s compensation included damages sums for the loss of his limb, together with adaptations to his home, equipment and the care which he needed to help him manage his disability arising from the amputation.
