£265,000 settlement for woman’s bereaved family after GP and hospital delayed diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer

Boyes Turner’s medical negligence lawyers recovered a £265,000 compensation settlement for the family of a young woman who suffered and died following delayed diagnosis and treatment of her cervical cancer.

The young mother, who had previously been investigated following abnormal smears, was aged 30 when, following delays in diagnosis and treatment by her GP and her local hospital, she was finally diagnosed with cervical cancer. By the time diagnosis was made, her cancer was inoperable. She underwent chemo-radiotherapy which caused her to suffer radiation enteritis and led to the loss of her fertility. The case was approaching a trial when she suffered a recurrence of the cancer and underwent further intensive chemotherapy.

The GP and hospital then admitted failings in the care that they had provided. The remaining part of the claim was put on hold whilst she underwent further treatment.

She died, leaving two children. Following her death, the claim concluded with a negotiated out-of-court settlement of £265,000 on behalf of her estate and her dependent children.
