£165,000 settlement for elderly woman hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing

Boyes Turner’s personal injury solicitors secured a £165,000 settlement for an 88-year-old woman who was hit by a car as she crossed the road on a pedestrian crossing.

She suffered injuries to her head and neck and a fracture to her knee. She was admitted to hospital after the accident and underwent open reduction and internal fixation surgery to her tibia. She remained in hospital for 10 days and was then discharged home. She needed extensive care from her family and support with her mobility.

Prior to the accident, our client was highly active and independent. She was a national cookery judge, and a keen walker who could run for the bus and easily kneel to do household cleaning or gardening tasks. Her injury left her disabled and severely restricted her mobility and her ability to return to her former activities.

Our medical experts advised that our client will need a total knee replacement by the age of 89 to alleviate her pain and correct the deformity left by the accident, but she will always have difficulty kneeling and squatting.

We helped our client pursue a claim against the driver of the car and secured an admission of liability from the driver’s insurers. During negotiations, we achieved a £165,000 settlement for our client, without the need for court proceedings. Our client’s settlement included compensation for increased accommodation costs arising from her injury, which will enable her to move to a more suitable bungalow or to adapt the home where she has lived for over 50 years.
