Sue is a Partner in Boyes Turner’s Court of Protection team and has over 30 years’ experience supporting individuals who have sustained serious injuries or live with complex disabilities. She specialises in acting for clients with acquired brain injuries and those who lack mental capacity, ensuring they receive the care, protection, and financial support needed to maximise their quality of life.

Sue advises on a wide range of Court of Protection matters, supporting individuals who lack capacity and those involved in their care. Her work includes applications for the appointment and removal of deputies, management of substantial personal injury and clinical negligence awards, statutory wills, gifting and estate planning, property transactions, and disputes concerning financial decision-making. She also assists families and professionals with complex capacity issues, ensuring that decisions are made in the individual’s best interests while safeguarding their welfare, assets, and long-term financial security.

Sue has particular expertise in managing the financial affairs of individuals who lack mental capacity, ensuring that their assets are protected and used to enhance their quality of life. Acting as a professional Deputy, she oversees all aspects of financial management, from day-to-day budgeting and payment of care costs to the administration of substantial personal injury and clinical negligence awards. She works closely with clients, families, financial advisers, case managers, and care teams to develop long-term financial plans that meet each individual’s current and future needs. Her approach combines meticulous financial oversight with a clear focus on maximising independence, security, and wellbeing for some of society’s most vulnerable individuals.

She has managed many multi-million pound compensation awards on behalf of clients, as well as managing the property and finances of clients with mental health challenges, neurodiverse clients, and elderly clients with neurodegenerative conditions such as dementia. Sue’s view is that her work has always been much more about “people” than the law, supporting clients and their families, training and supporting colleagues, and finding practical solutions to challenges.

Sue is very experienced in applying the principles of the Mental Capacity Act when making decisions on behalf of client who lack capacity, and she does not shy away from decision-making. She regards herself as accountable for the decisions that she makes on behalf of clients and is always willing to explain her decisions to clients, families and the Court of protection.

Sue is Chair of Trustees of “Headway Portsmouth and South East Hampshire”, a charity that supports adults with brain injuries and their families, a role that she has held for nearly 20 years.

Sue’s daughter is neurodivergent, which gives her an unrivalled insight into some of the challenges that her clients and family face on a day-to-day basis.
