Employment

In our next podcast Emma O’Connor talks to Developing Talent’s Gary McEwan about how our leaders can engage and motivate their teams and lead through this time of uncertainty. Through this difficult time where many are managing remote teams, there are of course challenges but there also real opportunities for personal leadership growth, to look after your team – and yourself - and to support their development as well as your own, even though it feels difficult right now. I was listening to a political commentator today who was saying that now more than ever we need political leaders who have courage and conviction to deliver us out of the current lockdown – even if they themselves are frightened on the inside. I think this translates to our own leadership population. How can our leaders lead at this difficult time – both physically and theoretically? What and where should be the focus - money, jobs, welfare? How can managers, sweep aside their own personal worries and focus on the end goal, when they themselves are unsure of what they might be?

We talk a lot about the “accidental manager” and how for most managers, appointment has been by reason of seniority or job title, rather than a passion for people development. However, during this time, there is a real opportunity to develop leadership skills not just in the short term, but for the long term. In my discussions during this podcast, we discuss initiatives such as having a “people first” agenda, starting meetings by asking your team how they are (and mean it!), as well as to keep driving forward the culture and purpose of your team and organisation can all help, not just your management practice, but also to encourage a sense of togetherness.

We cannot expect to know everything so training, coaching as well as putting on our own “oxygen mask” are still key.

Even though these are difficult times, we can still focus on doing the right thing for our teams, developing our own leadership skills and coming out the other side of this stronger and better prepared to face into further uncertainty as and when we need to.

In this time of great social and economic change, how do you want your leadership to be remembered?
